1 - Overview

Accelerate 2K2 is a tool that can help you increase internet connection speed and performance. By default, when networking is installed on Windows, the registry settings are not set for optimized performance for the specific hardware on the system.

Accelerate 2K2 provides a step-by-step interface that changes the registry settings. Accelerate 2K2 provides you with recommended settings that have been found to increase the throughput rate on most systems. However, every system is different, so a certain amount of adjustment may be necessary. You may find that the recommended settings do not speed up your connection. Fortunately, Accelerate 2K2's five-step process makes it easy to make these adjustments and speed up your connection. Familiarizing yourself with each step will make fine-tuning your connection much easier.

Note: Accelerate 2K2 allows you to reset your connection settings to the Windows default. However, if you already have different settings for your connection that you would like to preserve, it is recommended that you back up the registry before running this program (you can back up the entire Windows Registry using most backup programs).

1a - Running Accelerate 2K2

When Accelerate 2K2 is installed on your computer, it will automatically create a desktop icon and a Start Menu shortcut (unless you un-check these options during installation). To launch Accelerate 2K2, simply double-click on the desktop icon or click on the Accelerate shortcut in the Start Menu (click Start | Programs | Accelerate | Accelerate).

Accelerate 2K2's main window has two steps:

Step 1.  Select the connection type that your PC uses.  There are several DSL vendors and the two listed are the two most frequently encountered.

Step 2.  Press Automatic to let Accelerate 2K2 change settings for you or press Advanced to change settings yourself.

The Help button will display this help file.

The Min button simply minimizes the application.

The Quit button simply closes the application.

3 - Accelerating: Options

After launching Accelerate 2K2 and choosing an acceleration method, a new window will appear.

If you chose Automatic, then Accelerate 2K2 will optimize your connection settings.  Click the Accelerate Me!  button. You must restart Windows in order for the settings to take effect.

The Accelerate Me! button will accelerate your connection.

The Cancel button will return you to the main Accelerate window without accelerating your connection.

The Help button will display this help file.

The Close button simply closes the application.

An alternative to using the automatic acceleration method is to configure the settings yourself. Click the Advanced button and a new window will appear to begin the eight-step acceleration process. Each of the steps is described in greater detail in the following section. Again, you must restart Windows in order for the changes to take effect.

4 - Accelerate 2K2 - Step by step

While you are adjusting the values and settings in each of the following steps, you can use the Next and Back buttons to move among the steps and change any of the settings. No changes are made to the system until you click the Finish button at the end of step 5.

While altering the settings of any step, clicking the More Info button will give you a detailed description of the setting.

Clicking the Cancel button in any of the steps will restore the Windows Default Settings. To cancel, click the Back button until you reach the Accelerate 2K2 main window.

4a - Step 1: MTU Maximum Transfer Unit Options

MTU (Maximum Transfer Unit) – MTU determines how your computer sends and receives information as it breaks the information into packets of data.  Your network is expecting packets of certain length and you pick a larger packet size, your computer will be forced to break the packets into smaller pieces, which slows down your connection.  On the other hand, if your ISP is sending you big packets of information, and you have a selected a small packet size, you force your ISP to break his packets into smaller pieces, which can also slow down your connection.

4b - Step 2: Condition of Line Options

Condition of Line Options – If you know that your line has static on it, check the option for Bad.

4c - Step 3:  RWIN Options

The RWIN (Receive Window) value determines how much data the receiving computer is ready to receive.  After you select the MTU settings in step 1, Accelerate 2K2 will select a RWIN setting for you.   4 x MS and 6 x MS are good settings for Windows 98.  8 x MS and 10 x MS are best settings for Windows NT and Windows 2000.  There is also a manual setting.  Feel free to experiment with this setting.

4d - Step 4: NDI Cache Size

NDI Cache Size - The NDI cache size is the size of the cache of the Network Device. This size is set to 16 by default.  16 is appropriate for modem use, 32 is used for all other types of connections.

4e - Step 5: PMTU Auto Discovery

PMTU (Maximum Transfer Unit) Auto Discover – Selecting Yes in this box will allow Accelerate 2K2 to determine MTU packet size.

4f - Step 6: Set Time To Live (TTL) value

This setting specifies how many "hops" your Internet connection will attempt. The Windows default is 32. If you find that you have difficulty connecting to sites or systems on the Internet, then a higher setting is recommended.

4g - Step 7: Session Keep Alive

Session Keep Alive - Checking this box will enable you to set how long your Internet session will remain open.  Please note that this function may not be relevant on all systems.

4h - Step 8: Black Hole Detect

MTU Black Hole Detection (not recommended) - Checking this box will instruct your connection to try to locate "Black Hole Routers" while doing Path MTU discovery (see above). Sometimes this can slow down a connection.
